Been a while I blogged. Today’s post is not a happy one but I promise y’all my next post should be a mood booster. God willing.
So I just read something really disturbing online. It was so disturbing, I needed to share it with someone and vent. I know because of my inconsistency with my posts, my followers have reduced over the years. Well, I can’t promise to be more consistent because you know we are all dealing with lives outside our phones, in different ways, but I’ll try sha.
Sooo….
“Story story”….
This is where you say…. “Story”.
“Once upon a time”…
Lol. This is where you say… “Time Time”.
Lol kinda makes you miss the good old days when bottled coke was N30 and egg was N25. Well, now you’ll probably start respecting those female chickens who are going through labor, 🐓 more. It’s not easy to lay those eggs which are now becoming more golden and golden by the day. Lol, story for another day.
I always like to lighten the mood before I go dark, lol, buckle up guys. It’s about to get pretty dark in here,
So, on the 21st of September, 2023, a young 15 year old South African girl, named, Zenizole Vena, died secondarily as a result of negligence by 2 nurses at a hospital, but primarily because she was raped to death by 5 boys, for 4 days without being given anything to eat or drink.
A normal person may have even collapsed on day 2 but this girl endured, preserved and managed to escape on day 4.
Her first stop was a clinic called Motherwell clinic where she met 2 nurses. Without any iota of sympathy or empathy for this young girl, she was casually dismissed and told to go to a police station first, to open a case, when they ought to have at least provided her with necessary mental and physical care first, or at least even giving her food to eat or water to drink.
They refused to help her until she went to the station. They didn’t even arrange for transport to take this girl to this police station o. This is not a 25 years old lady or 30 year old woman. This is a teenage girl who has only lived for 15 years on this planet. What baffles me is that these nurses were women. If they were men, I’ll probably understand, but, they were women. I find this bewildering, because you’ll think a women will understand this kind of things better.
It reminds me of when I went to write an exam that could have a good impact on my future. You know in Nigeria, if you couldn’t get into the university for law or medicine or engineering or computer science or accounting or architecture or nursing, you will first do bsc for 4 years and go for Nysc before you start looking for what to actually do with your life😂😭🤲🏻🌝 . I think I covered all the relevant courses. If I missed anyone, I’m sorry, message me, I go add am🌝.
Well, in this exam, no matter the condition, the invigilators wouldn’t let you stand up until you are done with the exam and if you must stand up at all, it must be when you’ve been giving question sheet, and your time is counting and there is a lot of pressure to write something meaningful in that answer sheet. You can’t finish the exam before your time elapses and then stand up. It is not allowed.
Unfortunately for me, of all days of the calendar to pick, aunty Flo chose to say hi unexpectedly, on that particular day gan gan gan. Now this invigilators were mostly women o, who I expected to understand that these your rules and regulations can not work in all conditions, they didn’t care o. By the time I was done with the exam, lol, let’s just say a large proportion of the back of my very beautiful bright pink dress had been dyed into an entirely differently color. I was kinda embarrassed. People kept telling me, hey sis, sit properly, you’re stained. Lol. Omo. I couldn’t even stand up. A fellow lady watched me sitting there hopelessly after everyone had left the hall and decided to cover me until I got to the bathroom to clean up. You men that are not getting monthly visitors, you don’t know what God has done for you o. Lol, I’m still grateful sha. Thank you Lord in all things.
Lol, for the love of God, I just hope I passed that exam but I don’t know if you get my point, they said those were the rules and the rules are the rules. What if I was having an asthma attack?
See forget rules o, when it comes to human life, you have to apply basic instincts. In a situation of life and death, I don’t care whatever rules were laid down, a human life is more precious than anything in the world. You can get another job but that soul can never be replaced and if you are the reason why a soul left this world, their blood is on your head, forever. Sadly, the world is so far gone that we don’t even care anymore about one another. Everyone just cares about themselves.
You can only imagine my disappointment when further investigations further revealed that when Vena got to the police station( Motherwell Police Station), Community Service Centre did not even assist her. She was further neglected. She was told to wait and was only attended to after she waited for one hour, thirty minutes. This girl probably looked like she needed help. After being raped for 4 days by 5 men, there is no way she didn’t show signs of someone who needed urgent attention. It was during this time that she experienced seizures and started foaming at the mouth. She was later found dead on the floor in the charge office.
I hope to set up an NGO in the future, so help me God. The suffer wey human being don suffer for the hand of their fellow human being ha, eyes no fit talk am(For my abroad readers, this simply means humans have suffered too much in the hands of their fellow humans).
I will love to partner with foreign bodies and the Government in my country to actually have one social worker in every organization. Seriously, neglect, victimization, violence, injustices, stigma, discrimination, inequality, abuse and oppression is rampant in Africa with very few advocates who can actually speak up for the vulnerable. Them no even rate social workers for this country. People who were trained for 4 years, to look after the welfare of the victimized. Health workers need more training on how to handle sensitive groups and sensitive cases in the society.
In Nigeria, you dare not even open your mouth and say you were raped. You will most likely not be believed. Even if you are believed, you will either be gossiped about, stigmatized or even looked down on. Most women take this secrets to their grave, while men are even gaslighted into thinking they can’t be raped even if it happened as a teenager. There are so many anomalies in this society that has been accepted as the norm.
There is not much we can do. But we can only try. If you can’t provide a solution to the social problems in your community, at least don’t be the problem. I saw a tweet today, where someone abused a man and called him a goblin. She said he was very ugly and I can only imagine the kind of heart it takes to be that unkind to your fellow human. No empathy. You will just open your mouth and razor blade will come out.
To kill is not to shoot people with a gun. You can shoot someone with your words and actions. We have killed so many people. They are physically present but mentally gone. Probably there needs to be a redefinition of the word ‘murder’. I can’t begin to envisage the last hours of Zenizole Vena. The way she felt during those moments. Even if she survived, it will take a lot of time for those mental wounds to heal. When she needed her fellow humans at her lowest, she was neglected. Poor baby girl. May God forgive us all. I’m tearing up right now. May her soul rest in peace.
We need to do better y’all. Love is the barest minimum. If there is no humanity in a world full of humans, what makes us different from animals? Even some animals have hearts. A dog jumped to take a knife for its owner, while he was being attacked, the other day and bravely fought off his attackers, albeit, severely wounded.
Look, I know we are all not perfect but the question is …..are we even trying anymore?????
